When I was a little girl, my mother and cousins styled my hair with pomade. I still remember the assortment of clear-, blue-, green-, black-, red-, and yellow-colored pomades they used to do my hair. I've heard similar stories from other women about their childhoods, so I believed that everyone knew what pomade was.
Since starting The Pomade Shop, I realize that many people are more familiar with the term "grease." When pomade-inquirers learn that it is grease, two responses typically follow: (1) oh, okay, or (2) grease. The second response is occasionally spoken in a less-than-pleasant tone, and I do understand: grease has a bad rap. It's viewed by many as a heavy, waxy, sticky, pore-clogging, mineral- and/or petrolatum-filled agent that weighs down and dries out the hair.
Well, times have changed. More options are available. Pomade is no longer relegated to being a heavy mass of grease with drying properties that far outweigh its nourishing ones. Pomades can now be crafted to be light, easily absorbed into the skin, and nourishing to the hair and scalp--all while fulfilling its more-known purposes of adding sheen and taming frizz.
We at The Pomade Shop believe that beauty and wellness are not (nor do they have to be) opposing forces. Beauty can be achieved through wellness; our products are tactile examples of the dual nature of wellness and beauty. All of our pomades are free of mineral oil, petrolatum, and parabens, and can be used on straight, curly, and wavy hair types.
Also, we stock our pomades with the good stuff (emu oil, avocado oil, rosemary oil, castor oil, wheatgerm oil, coconut oil, etc.), so a dab is all you need.
